Why Lagosians Love These Paint Brands For Houses

Date:

Painting a house can be mind-boggling when you have no idea what colour or paint brand to use. It gets even more overwhelming knowing that the Nigerian paint market is huge and there are a lot of top brands competing for visibility in the market space.

Currently, the popular paint brands in the country include Berger Paints, Dulux, Caplux, Finecoat, President, Prestige, and Eagle, amongst others.

To find out what paint manufacturer Lagosians prefer, Propertydome put out a poll for Lagosians to choose the best paint brand they’ve used for their houses and the reason behind these choices. During this survey, it became obvious that a major factor for selecting a paint brand is the quality as people always want products that would stand the test of time.

Overview of the major paint brands

Berger paints

Berger Paints has brands in different segments, ranging from the Luxol Emulsion, Fire Resistant Texcote, and the Luxol Gloss. The company was formerly known as British Paints (W.A.) Limited.

Dulux

Founded in 2015, Dulux makes the paint for both wholesalers and retailers and meets their painting needs. The paint company provides paint in over 120 colors scheming, and the production processes are done with high speed and preciseness.

Chemstar

Chemstar Industry Nigeria Limited, makers of Finecoat and Shield Paints, has grown from a small beginning in 1995 to a huge player in the market.

The Results

The poll which was put up on social media (Twitter) had over 700 votes of people picking Dulux paint as their most preferred option. While Dulux had 65% of the votes, Finecoat came through with 23% and Berger had only 12%.

However, newer paint brands were also picked by some users. Such paint manufacturers include Armstrong paint, Hardrock, Plascon, and Double design paints.

For Kenneth Joseph, a painter based in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, Finecoat is the best and he recommends it for his clients. “Finecoat has proven to be effective so far from previous uses, and as a painter, that’s my recommendation to whosoever that requires my service because it is quality,” He said.

Another respondent, Amara Ajuogu said Dulux is the best paint brand as it is durable. She also said Dulux has quite the reputation having been in the market for years and that she has been using it for quite a while.

According to Ayoola Oyetoyan, the best brand for her is Dulux but due to its expensive nature, she also uses Precision paints as they are affordable and quality as well. As for Fine Coat, she says it has depreciated in quality and that it is not as good as it was before.

Another painter who simply identified himself as Ahmed said Berger paint is his best because of its quality. He also said the only reason most people do not use it for their paintings is that it is very expensive unlike other cheaper paint brands in the market.

I have noticed that you hardly see people requesting only Berger Paints products to be used for their paintings whether interior or exterior. People prefer to go for cheaper products in the market, this is because of the cost, not everyone can afford Berger paints but it is a good brand” the painter added.

As Lagosians continue to share their best paint brand, one major thing to note is that there are a lot of paint manufacturers in Nigeria. A 2016 Data from the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), a major regulator of the chemical and paint industry, shows that there are 68 registered paint producers in Nigeria.

However, the major players continue to take the bulk of market share as a result of their pioneering reputation as small and local brands are forced to play on the sidelines. The reason for this can also be attributed to the good distribution network and adequate access to financing as not all paint manufacturers currently can afford this hence why we have only a few paint manufacturers dominating the scene.
