Common Home Decor Mistakes People Make

Date:

No one is immune to home decor mistakes. It is normal to find yourself making one or two decor mistakes at some point. This is okay as far as you learn from it and have a better understanding of what works.

Decorating the house can be time-consuming. It is a tough task and can get overwhelming. Sometimes, in order to get things done quickly, people rush their house decor and this in turn leads to home decor mistakes.

Below are some of the common home decor mistakes people make;

Leaving your cables and cords exposed

Exposed wires and cables hanging around can create clutter in your home thereby making it visually unappealing. It can also be dangerous especially when you have young children around the house. This is a common home decor mistake people make. It is best you look for cord covers and paint them the same color as your walls for a perfect camouflage. You can also keep them in a box that’s kept behind a desk or rack.

Using Toilet rugs

Some people do not understand that having toilet rugs in your bathroom is a big decor mistake. Toilet rugs might look fancy and light up your bathroom; especially when they are brightly coloured but don’t do it. They are not easy to clean and can easily become a breeding ground for germs on the bathroom floor. Remember that the rug would mostly be damp because of the prevalence of water in the bathroom. Instead of rugs you should go for a bath mat, which might or might not come with a rubber backing.

Not Testing the wall color

It is important that before you paint your walls, you should consider testing the paint especially on a large span of a wall before you splash colours on your wall. Most people do not do this.

This does not, however, mean that you should buy a lot of paint to test the colours. Instead, go for a few small containers. Try different shades of colours until you find one that really appeals to you. The last thing you want to do is to go for a colour yet end up with a depressing shade.

Also, see how the color looks against your furniture and at different times of the day. There are many paint tester apps that you can use!

Hanging Art or frames at the Wrong Height

Hanging art or frames in the house is an amazing way of decoration but some people make the mistake of hanging it too high or too low. Hanging frames at the wrong height is a common decor mistake. You do not want to crane your neck when you want to see a piece of art so make sure you get the layout right before you hang art.

Overdoing the Sofa Pillows

It’s easy to feel like you need a whole bunch of throw pillows to make your couch feel cushy but too much of them usually just makes your living room look messy.

Two pillows on each end are really all you need for a sofa to look chic and not stuffy. So if you make this mistake you need to stop now to reduce the number of throw pillows you have on your sofa.

Stacking Photo Albums on the Table

If you still do this, stop. This is an archaic decoration idea and it is unappealing. When you stack photo albums on your table in the living room it clutters the place. Better to have a gallery on your wall with your favourite pictures.
